Measuring a kitchen step by step

All you need is a tape measure, paper and a pen. Write the measurements down in centimetres and check each one twice.

1. Draw a rough sketch

Draw the kitchen as seen from above. Mark the walls, the door and the window. You will write the measurements on this sketch.

2. Measure the wall widths

Measure every wall that will have cabinets from corner to corner. Walls are not always straight, so measure at three heights – near the floor, at worktop level and near the ceiling – and use the smallest figure.

3. Measure the ceiling height

Measure from floor to ceiling in at least two places. Note any suspended ceiling, beam or cornice separately.

4. Mark doors and windows

  • the width and height of the door and window,
  • their distance from the nearest corner,
  • the height of the window sill from the floor.

5. Note the services

Mark the water supply, waste pipe, gas valve, sockets and extractor outlet together with their distances from the corner and the floor. The position of the sink and hob usually follows from these points.

6. Add the appliances

Write down the width, height and depth of the fridge, oven and dishwasher. If you are buying a new appliance, give the model.

Send us your measurements

You can attach your sketch and a few photos of the kitchen in the "Measurements and plan" section of the quote form. We also measure on site before production; your own measurements speed up the preliminary quote.
